Canine Harmony

It’s not about perfection, it's about harmony.

It hard to have harmony when:
Your dog drags you down the street during your walks.
Your dog jumps, out of control energy
Your dog doesn’t listen to you.

Here is the reality: your dog is just as frustrated as you are. Training is a two-way street and both the person and the dog need to work together. That's what we teach at Canine Harmony. We teach you and your dog how to communicate with each other.

Foundational Commands

One of the most important aspects of training a well-behaved dog is teaching them foundational commands. Commands like "sit," "come," "heel," "recall," "down," and "place" provide a solid foundation for obedience and control.

Leash Techniques

What does it mean to leash train a dog? In short, a leash-trained dog is a dog that has been taught to walk with a loose leash by your side, and one that doesn't pull, cross in front of you, or bark uncontrollably at the sight of other dogs, cats, humans, or other distractions.

Socialization Techniques

The process of preparing a dog or cat to enjoy interactions and be comfortable with other animals, people, places, and activities.

Lure Training

Luring is a popular and easy way to teach dogs a variety of behaviors. It usually works by a handler using a treat on the dog's nose to steer or lead a dog to move their body in a specific direction, essentially “luring” them.

FAQs

Here are some effective tips to get your dog to listen better:

## Use Your Dog's Name
Before giving a command, say your dog's name to get their attention focused on you. Dogs tend to tune out repetitive words, so using their name helps reset their focus.

## Keep Training Sessions Short
Dogs have limited attention spans, especially puppies. Keep training sessions to 5-10 minutes max to avoid losing their interest. End on a positive note before they get distracted.

## Use High-Value Rewards
Motivate your dog to listen by using smelly, high-value treats or their favorite toy as a reward when they obey a command. This makes listening worthwhile for them.

## Practice in Distracting Environments
After your dog has mastered a command in a low-distraction setting, gradually increase distractions like practicing in the backyard, then a park. This proofs their obedience.

## Use a Positive Interrupter
If your dog isn't listening, use a positive interrupter like a whistle or shake a jar of treats to quickly regain their focus before giving the command again.

## Be Consistent
Ensure everyone in the family is using the same commands and reward markers. Inconsistency will confuse your dog on what behavior is expected.

## Avoid Repeating Commands
If your dog doesn't obey after giving a command once, don't repeat it. This teaches them they don't have to listen the first time. Instead, use an interrupter and start again.

The key is making it worthwhile for your dog to listen by using proper rewards and keeping training sessions short and positive. Consistency, patience and setting them up for success in gradually more distracting environments will help cement their obedience.

The frequency of washing depends on hair type. Generally, washing 2-3 times a month is recommended, but those with oily hair might need more frequent washing, while dogs with dry hair can go longer between washes.
